Pattern Design Experiment: AI vs Human Creativity

T-Shirt Patterns Design:
an artistic experiment - AI vs. human creativity

This experiment aims to uncover a timeless contrast between human creativity and AI.
To delve into this distinction, I chose abstract art, as its neutrality accentuates the subtleties of any meaning differentiation.
I started by creating a series of colorful patterns using arbitrary techniques like spraying colors on paper or pressing two pieces with different patterns against each other.

These techniques were meant to mimic the generative process of AI, in order for me to observe my creative impulses in relation to the result. If I felt the urge to add something more to the artwork, it meant that there was something inside me that artificial intelligence lacked.

As I looked at the random patterns of color, in my mind I could see different shapes based on what is known as Gestalt Laws of Perceptual Organization. As you can see in the examples below, in many cases I felt the overwhelming drive to manifest my artistic intention instead of going along with the random process.

It felt as though the paintings were attempting to communicate with me in a collaborative process of actualizing them and myself, which involves important notions like self-knowledge and exploration of meaning. We cannot say the same about artificial intelligence, though. There is no interaction between AI and its database, just processing. Indeed, I couldn’t resist the mysterious call to get my hands dirty quite literally and bring more definition to the clusters of beauty and meaning I was seeing.

Almost every great experiment encounters serendipitous events. One morning, right before waking up, I experienced a hypnopompic state where my subconscious sent me personal growth-related messages through vivid fractal shapes very similar to the ones I was keen to define in my artwork.

I managed to decipher them thanks to my habit of keeping a dream journal, and so I realized that the urge of leaving my creative print on a set of manually generated patterns is a matter of cosmic archetypes and subjective psychology, all encompassed in a personal spiritual journey. Certainly, this artistic exploration of self-knowledge and human nature surpasses the value of any art crea
ted by AI, affirming how irreplaceable true human creativity can be.

Below, you can see how I applied these designs to different POD products. Enjoy!
